Satsang or satsanga in Sanskrit means in association with good. Sat means “truth” and sangha means “community” and for traditional spiritual followers, these gatherings used to entail everything from chanting, tree planting to discourse and meditations.
In Kalaasangha's first Satsang, we invoked discourse on what creativity means… what South Asian creativity means… what does it mean to us as a community and how do we begin to better understand and absorb it.
Performances included Boston University's premier female Bhangra team Vakhri Taur Diyan, Northeastern's acapella Desi group Aaroh, a screening of the touching anthropological exploration of immigration, MUHAJIR by Ryhem Ahmed, and a reading from my dear friend Sushmita Udoshi. We followed this with a shared meal, open dialogue, and meditation as a mechanism to collectively analyze and experience South Asian creativity. We highlighted the importance of energy, unity, a deep appreciation for home, food, mindfulness, and community in South Asian artistry. The atmosphere was overflowing with love, care and was one I was beyond grateful to have experienced.
Kalaasangha, and I ,as it's founder and leader, look forward to continue creating spaces such as these.
